Origin and meaning of Marius
Marius takes up the Latin family name Marius, borne by the gens that gave Rome the consul and general Gaius Marius, reformer of the Republican army; the root is probably tied to Mars, the god of war. In Romania the unadapted Latin form entered common use in the twentieth century, riding the awareness of the language's Latin roots, and lived alongside Marian and Mario. It is still one of the most frequent men's names in the country.
