The calculator is based on Naegele's rule, the standard used by doctors: it adds 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your last period. It's an estimate — only about 5% of babies are born exactly on the due date, while most arrive between week 37 and week 42.
If your cycle isn't 28 days, the tool adjusts the estimate automatically. If you've had a dating ultrasound, calculating from the scan is more accurate than period dates alone.
If you remember the first day of your last period, use the last-period method — it's the most common one. If you know exactly when conception happened (e.g. after assisted reproduction), use that. If you've already had a dating ultrasound, that calculation is the most reliable.
If your doctor has already given you a due date, you can enter it directly to see how many weeks you are today and how long is left.
First trimester (1–13): the period when the main organs form. Nausea, tiredness and changes in taste are common. The first dating ultrasound is usually done between week 7 and week 12.
Second trimester (14–27): the most stable phase of pregnancy. The bump becomes visible and you'll feel the first kicks (usually between week 16 and week 22). The anatomy scan is performed around week 20.
Third trimester (28–40): your baby gains weight rapidly. From week 37 the pregnancy is considered full term. Maternity leave typically starts around month 8, though rules vary by country.
The ideal time to create a baby registry is the second trimester: you still have plenty of time to choose calmly, you already know the sex (if you want to know), and you can share the list with family and friends who'll start asking for gift ideas.
