Origin and meaning of Vlad
Vlad began as a short form of the Slavic names in vlad-, from the root volděti, “to rule, to govern”, shared with Vladislav and Vladimir. It is one of the oldest names of the Wallachian dynasty: it was borne by Vlad Țepeș, the fifteenth-century prince of Wallachia who inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula. In Romania it has come back into fashion as a short, modern choice, picked precisely for its blunt one-syllable energy.
