Origin and meaning of Salvador

Salvador comes from the Latin salvator, 'savior', from the verb salvare, and in Christian tradition is a title referring to Jesus Christ. The name is carried devoutly across the Iberian and Lusophone world, and also gave its name to the Brazilian city of Salvador da Bahia, the first colonial capital of Brazil. In Portugal it's chosen for its strong spiritual meaning and its solemn, distinctive sound.
