Origin and meaning of Radu

Radu comes from the Slavic root radŭ, “glad, content”, shared with Radoslav and Radomir, and is documented in Romania from the Middle Ages. Several princes of Wallachia bore it, among them Radu cel Frumos, brother of Vlad Țepeș, and the country's founding legend credits a Radu Negru with the birth of Wallachia. Short, soft and unmistakably Romanian, it has no equivalent outside the country.
