Origin and meaning of Luca
Luca is the form used in Italy and much of Europe of the Latin Lucas, traced to lux, 'light', or read as 'man from Lucania'. It is the name of Saint Luke the Evangelist, author of the third Gospel and patron of doctors and painters. Extremely common for boys in Italy and loved in German-speaking lands too; curiously, in Hungary (Luca) and elsewhere it can also be a girl's name. Variants: Lucas, Luka, Luke.
