Origin and meaning of Ariel

Ariel comes from the Hebrew Ariʾel (אֲרִיאֵל), 'lion of God', a name that in the Bible also stands poetically for the city of Jerusalem. Unisex and airy in sound, it was made famous in literature by the airy spirit in Shakespeare's Tempest and, more recently, by Disney's little mermaid, which spread its use for girls in the English-speaking world. It remains popular in Israel, English-speaking countries and Latin America.
