Origin and meaning of Bogdan
Bogdan is a Slavic compound of bogŭ, “god”, and dan, “given”: it means “given by God” and is an exact calque of the Greek Theodore. It carries particular historical weight in Romania, since Bogdan I was the voivode who around 1359 made Moldavia independent from the Kingdom of Hungary. Widely used throughout the second half of the twentieth century, it remains a recognisable classic, often shortened to Bogdi.
