Origin and meaning of Amir

Amir comes from the Arabic amīr (أمير), 'prince, commander, emir', from the root ʾ-m-r, 'to command'; the same word gives us 'emir' and 'admiral'. The name evokes authority, nobility and leadership. It is very common across the Muslim world and in Iran, and also exists as a Hebrew name meaning 'treetop'. Variants such as Ameer and Emir carry it between the Arab world, Persia and Turkey.
