Origin and meaning of Zita
Zita springs from the Old Tuscan zita, 'girl, young maiden', a popular medieval word. The name is tied above all to Saint Zita of Lucca, a humble servant who became patron of the city and of domestic workers. It was also borne by Zita of Bourbon-Parma, the last Empress of Austria. In Italy it is now rare, with an ancient, devout flavour rooted in Tuscany; it is also known in Central Europe and Hungary, where the empress's memory has kept it alive.
