Origin and meaning of Zeno

Zeno derives from the Greek Zénon, a short form of names compounded with Zeus, king of the gods: it means 'of Zeus, gift of Zeus'. It is a name with a philosophical, ancient echo, borne by two great Greek thinkers, Zeno of Elea and Zeno of Citium, and by Saint Zeno, patron of Verona. In Italy it is rare but reviving, prized for its elegant, modern brevity; it is also known in Germany. The variants Zenon and Zénon live on in Slavic and French lands.
