Walid (وليد) comes from the root w-l-d, 'to beget, to give birth', the same root behind 'mawlid' (birth) and 'walad' (son): it literally means newborn child. A name with an almost celebratory value marking the very start of life, it has been borne by major historical figures such as the Umayyad caliph Al-Walid I, responsible for important conquests and religious buildings, and in modern times by Saudi prince Al-Walid bin Talal, a well-known international businessman and investor.
