Origin and meaning of Urbano

Urbano derives from the Latin Urbanus, from urbs, 'city': it meant 'of the city, refined, of elegant manners', as opposed to rustic. The name has a long church tradition and was borne by numerous popes, among them Urban II, who proclaimed the First Crusade. In Italy it is an ancient, now uncommon name with a dignified tone; it is also common in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking areas as Urbano, while the forms Urban and Urbain live on in Northern Europe and France.
