Origin and meaning of Tudor
Tudor is the popular Romanian form of Theodore, from the Greek Theódōros, joining theós, “god”, and dôron, “gift”. Alongside the variants Toader and Tudorel it belongs to the rural tradition of Moldavia and Wallachia, and was borne by Tudor Vladimirescu, leader of the 1821 uprising, and by the poet Tudor Arghezi. After decades of neglect it is fashionable again with Romanian parents, chosen for its short, old-fashioned sound. The name day is 17 February, the feast of Saint Theodore Tiro.
