Origin and meaning of Tito

Tito takes up the Roman praenomen Titus, of uncertain origin, perhaps linked to the idea of 'honour' or 'defender'; it was among the most common given names in ancient Rome. It was borne by the emperor Titus, who completed the Colosseum, and by the historian Livy (Tito Livio); a disciple of Saint Paul was also called Titus. In Italy it is a name of classical tradition, rare and sober today; the forms Titus and Tite survive in Anglo-Germanic and French lands. It has a noble, Latin tone.
