Origin and meaning of Tariq

Tariq (طارق) comes from the root t-r-q, 'to knock', and in Arabic tradition originally described someone arriving and knocking at the door by night; by poetic extension 'at-tariq' also names the morning star, as in the Quranic sura of the same name. The name is inseparably tied to Tariq ibn Ziyad, the Berber general who led the 711 Islamic conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, giving his name to Gibraltar (Jabal Tariq, the mountain of Tariq). A historic and prestigious name, it remains widely used across the Arab world for its evocative power.
