Origin and meaning of Ștefan

Ștefan comes from the Greek stéphanos, “crown, garland”, the wreath placed on a victor's head; it was the name of the first Christian martyr, the deacon Stephen. In Romania the name is inseparable from Ștefan cel Mare, voivode of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504, canonised by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 1992. It has ranked among the top choices for newborn boys for years, and the 27 December name day, right after Christmas, is one of the country's most widely celebrated.
