Origin and meaning of Santo
Santo comes from Latin sanctus, 'holy, sacred, blessed,' the participle of sancire, 'to make inviolable, to consecrate.' It is a name of clear devotional value, given as a wish for holiness and a sign of faith. It is common above all in southern Italy and Sicily, where devotion to patron saints runs especially deep. It has a strong, solemn tone. In the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds it appears as Santos; in Italy today it is traditional but ever less frequent among the young.
