Origin and meaning of Salvatrice

Salvatrice is the feminine of Salvatore, from Christian Latin salvator, 'the one who saves, redeemer,' referring to Christ the Saviour — hence 'saviouress, redeemer.' It is a devotional name, created to honour the figure of the Saviour or the Virgin. Typical of Sicily and southern Italy, it is rather rare today and is often shortened to Sara, Tina or Rina in everyday use. Virtually absent outside Italy, it keeps a deep religious value and a solemn, old-world sound.
