Origin and meaning of Sabrina
Sabrina is Celtic in origin: it is the Latinised name of Britain's River Severn, tied to the legend of a maiden who drowned in its waters and became its nymph. The meaning thus points to the river and its youthful deity. Little used for centuries, the name took off in the twentieth century through literature and film, spreading through Italy, the English-speaking world, Germany and France. Its elegant rhythm carries a faintly fairy-tale charm.
