Origin and meaning of Ruggero
Ruggero is Germanic in origin, from Hrodgar — hrod, 'glory, fame,' and ger, 'spear' — meaning 'glorious spear,' an image of warrior valour. Brought to Italy by the Normans, it is tied to the great Sicilian kings Roger I and Roger II, founders of the Norman kingdom. Its cognates are French and English Roger and German Rüdiger. In Italy it is traditional and not very common, with a medieval, regal ring, made famous too by the composer Ruggero Leoncavallo.
