Rolando is Germanic in origin, from Hrodland — hrod, 'glory, fame,' and land, 'land' — meaning 'famous throughout the land.' It shares its root with Orlando and recalls the legendary paladin Roland, hero of the Chanson de Roland who fell at Roncevaux. It is common in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Latin America, where it sounds manly and sonorous. Today it is a traditional, not very frequent name with an epic ring; the cognates Roland and Orlando spread its presence across Europe.
