Origin and meaning of Rinaldo
Rinaldo is Germanic in origin, from Raginald — ragin, 'counsel,' plus wald, 'power, rule' — meaning 'mighty counsellor' or 'one who rules with wisdom.' In the Middle Ages it became famous as a name for paladins and knights, a hero of Ariosto's Orlando Furioso and Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered, as well as of an opera by Handel. In Italy it is traditional and now rather rare, with an epic, chivalric charm. Abroad the cognates Reginald and Reynaldo prevail, while the Italian form stays unmistakably literary.
