Origin and meaning of Renzo
Renzo began as a short form of Lorenzo, from Latin Laurentius, 'from Laurentum' or 'crowned with laurel,' the plant that symbolised victory and glory. Now an independent name, it has a crisp, plain, thoroughly Italian sound. Manzoni fixed it in the collective imagination through Renzo Tramaglino of The Betrothed. Common in Italy above all in the twentieth century, it is less frequent today but enjoys great prestige thanks to the architect Renzo Piano. Abroad it is rare, felt as distinctly Italian.
