Origin and meaning of Pellegrino

Pellegrino comes from Latin peregrinus, 'foreigner, wayfarer,' from per ager, 'through the fields' — first anyone travelling beyond the borders, then the pilgrim journeying to holy sites. The name thus blends the idea of the journey with that of faith. In Italy it has ancient roots and a strong religious stamp, supported by the cult of Saint Pellegrino; more frequent in the centre-south, it stays a traditional, uncommon name today, nearly absent abroad except as Peregrine.
