Origin and meaning of Pasqualino

Pasqualino is the affectionate diminutive of Pasquale, which goes back to Christian Latin paschalis, 'relating to Easter,' itself from Hebrew pesach, the Passover that Easter commemorates. It was traditionally given to children born in the Easter season, as a wish for rebirth and blessing, while the pet-name ending adds a warm, typically southern touch. Common above all in southern Italy and tied to popular devotion, it has grown rather rare today and is hardly used outside Italy.
