Origin and meaning of Nereo

Nereo comes from the Greek Nereus, the name of the mythological sea god, father of the Nereids and a wise, kindly figure of the calm waters. At its root may lie nēros, 'wet, watery'. The name thus evokes the sea and ancient wisdom. Found almost only in Italy and, to a lesser degree, in Spanish-speaking areas, it is rare and refined; it was also borne by an early Roman martyr, Saint Nereus.
