Naomi comes from the Hebrew Noʿomi (נָעֳמִי), 'my delight, sweetness, pleasantness'. In the Bible she is Ruth's mother-in-law, a model of loyalty and family affection. Curiously, a homophonous Japanese name also exists, written with different kanji.
