Origin and meaning of Mihai
Mihai is the Romanian form of Michael, from the Hebrew Mīkhā'ēl, a rhetorical question meaning “who is like God?”: the name of the archangel who leads the heavenly host. In Romania it summons two towering figures — Mihai Viteazul, the prince who in 1600 first united Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania, and Mihai Eminescu, regarded as the national poet. The 8 November name day, dedicated to the archangels Michael and Gabriel, is one of the most widely kept in the Orthodox calendar.
