Origin and meaning of Mauro

Mauro comes from the Latin Maurus, 'inhabitant of Mauretania, Moor', referring to a dark complexion. The name was spread by the cult of Saint Maurus, Saint Benedict's favourite disciple. In Italy it is a traditional men's name, very common among later 20th-century generations; in related forms it is also present in the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world, where Mauro keeps a full, warm sound.
