Origin and meaning of Matilda
Matilda comes from Germanic maht, 'strength, might', and hild, 'battle' — thus 'mighty in battle', a name of medieval queens and noblewomen. It was borne by Empress Matilda, who claimed the English throne, and by Matilda of Canossa, a powerful ruler of medieval Italy. Common in the English-speaking world and Scandinavia, in Italy it becomes Matilde; other forms are Mathilde and Mathilda.
