Origin and meaning of Matei

Matei is the Romanian form of Matthew, from the Hebrew Mattityāhū, “gift of Yahweh”, which reached Europe through the Greek Matthaîos: it belonged to the apostle and evangelist, the tax collector called by Jesus. In Romania it was borne by Matei Basarab, prince of Wallachia from 1632 to 1654, remembered for founding printing presses and monasteries. Short and clear, it has climbed sharply up the newborn charts in recent years, often alongside Luca and David. Its name day is 16 November.
