Origin and meaning of Lucilla
Lucilla is an affectionate Latin diminutive of Lucia, from the root lux, 'light': it means 'little light, glow-worm,' an image of luminous tenderness. It was borne by Roman matrons and by a Christian martyr venerated as a saint. A delicate, ancient name, today rare but elegantly charming, it is almost exclusively Italian. Abroad it matches the forms Lucille, widespread in France and English-speaking countries, and the Spanish Lucila.
