Origin and meaning of Jana
Jana is a girl's name carried by different traditions. In Arabic جنى means 'harvest, fruit' and recalls جنة, the 'garden' of Paradise; in Slavic and Germanic Europe it is instead the feminine of Jan (John), 'God is gracious'. This dual nature makes it common both in the Arab world and in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. The Czech tennis player Jana Novotná, a Wimbledon champion, made it well known.
