Origin and meaning of Ionuț
Ionuț is the affectionate diminutive of Ion, the popular Romanian form of John, from the Hebrew Yōḥānān, “God is gracious”; the suffix -uț is the same one found in Romanian pet forms such as băiețel or Măriuța. From a nickname it became a given name in its own right, entered on the birth certificates of hundreds of thousands of Romanians. Its name day is 7 January, the Synaxis of Saint John the Baptist, one of the country's most celebrated.
