Origin and meaning of Ioan
Ioan is the learned, liturgical Romanian form of John, from the Hebrew Yōḥānān, “God is gracious”, by way of the Greek Iōánnēs; it lives alongside the popular variant Ion and the diminutive Ionuț. It is the name of John the Baptist and of the Evangelist, and for centuries it was the single most common name in Romanian villages. It still appears regularly among the top names given to newborns, often as a middle name in pairings such as Andrei-Ioan. Name day 7 January.
