Origin and meaning of Ianis
Ianis is a Romanian variant, with Greek-Balkan influence, of Ioan/Ioannis, itself from the Hebrew Yochanan, 'God is gracious'. It entered wide use thanks to footballer Ianis Hagi, son of the legendary Gheorghe Hagi, and is now chosen by Romanian parents as a modern, sporty alternative to the more classic Ioan, while keeping a link to the Orthodox tradition behind the name John.
