Origin and meaning of Haoran

Haoran is an elegant Chinese boy's name, transcribed in pinyin from the characters 浩然. The phrase goes back to the philosopher Mencius and his 浩然之气, the 'vast flowing spirit', an upright and incorruptible nobility of soul: hao means 'vast, immense' and ran 'so, in such a way'. It is a cultured, admired name in mainland China, prized for its echo of moral greatness, while almost unknown outside the Chinese world.
