Origin and meaning of Gualtiero
Gualtiero is the Italian form of the Germanic Waldhari, from wald, 'power, rule,' and hari, 'army': literally 'the one who commands the army,' a war-leader. It reached Italy with the Lombards and Normans and flourished in the age of chivalry. Today it sounds old-fashioned and is fairly rare, while elsewhere in Europe the variants Walter, in English- and German-speaking lands, and Gautier in France prevail.
