Origin and meaning of Gregorio

Gregorio comes from the Greek Gregórios, from the verb gregorein, 'to watch, to stay awake': it meant the vigilant, attentive man, an image dear to early Christians called to 'keep watch.' Borne by sixteen popes and many saints, including Gregory the Great, it carries a long ecclesiastical tradition. It remains common in Italy, Spain and Portugal, while the parallel forms Gregory and Gregor prevail in the English and Germanic worlds.
