Origin and meaning of Gloria
Gloria comes from the Latin gloria, 'glory, fame, splendour' — a word with strong religious weight too, as in the Christian hymn 'Gloria in excelsis Deo.' A bright, solemn name, it wishes honour and greatness. Common in Italy, the Spanish-speaking world and English-speaking countries, it was hugely popular in the twentieth century. Its open, ringing vowels make it instantly recognisable everywhere.
