Origin and meaning of Gerardo

Gerardo comes from the Germanic Gerhard, made of ger, 'spear', and hard, 'strong, bold': hence 'strong with the spear, valiant warrior'. Borne with great devotion in southern Italy thanks to the much-loved Redemptorist Saint Gerard Majella, it is also common in Spain and Latin America. It has well-known forms across Europe, from English Gerard to German Gerhard, and conveys strength and courage.
