Origin and meaning of Flavio

Flavio comes from the Roman family name Flavius, from the adjective flavus, 'blond, golden, yellow-gold', first referring to hair colour. The gens Flavia gave Rome emperors such as Vespasian and Titus. Common in Italy, Spain and Latin America, it has a classical, elegant ring. Among historical bearers stands the humanist Flavio Biondo, regarded as one of the first archaeologists and the scholar who coined the term 'Middle Ages'.
