Origin and meaning of Faris

Faris (فارس) literally means knight, one who rides and masters a horse — a central image in Bedouin culture and later in the early Islamic caliphates' epics, where the horseman embodied courage, nobility and battlefield skill. The same root also gave Arabic its historical name for Persia ('Fars'), so the two are sometimes loosely associated, though the chivalric etymology is the accepted one. Very common across the modern Arab world, it is valued for its strong sound and its direct link to virtues like valor and honor.
