Origin and meaning of Eugenia

Eugenia is the feminine of Eugenio, from the Greek Eugéneia, from eû, 'well,' and génos, 'birth, stock': 'of noble birth, well-born.' Made venerable by saints and borne by Empress Eugénie of France, it is common in Italy, Spain, Greece and Latin America. With a rich, aristocratic sound, it carries a classic, elegant charm. A touch old-fashioned but of great nobility, it offers the graceful nickname Genia and the French variant Eugénie.
