Origin and meaning of Eligio
Eligio comes from the Latin Eligius, from eligere, 'to choose, to elect': it means 'chosen, elect'. The name is tied to Saint Eligius (Éloi), bishop of Noyon and a skilled goldsmith, patron of goldsmiths, blacksmiths and metalworkers. Of ancient devotion, it is now rare in Italy and the Spanish-speaking world. Abroad it survives as Éloi in France and Eloy in Spain, both short and bright in sound.
