Origin and meaning of Egidio
Egidio comes from the Greek Aigídios, from aigís, the 'aegis', the goatskin shield of Zeus and Athena, a symbol of protection. The name thus means 'protector, shield'. It is tied to Saint Giles, a much-revered medieval hermit, patron of blacksmiths and the disabled, among the famed Fourteen Holy Helpers. Rare and old in Italy, abroad it lives on as Gilles in France, Giles in English and Gil in Spain.
