Origin and meaning of Eduard

Eduard is the Romanian form of Edward, from the Anglo-Saxon Eadweard, joining ead, “wealth, prosperity”, and weard, “guardian”: “keeper of riches”. It entered Romania in the nineteenth century with the vogue for Western names and has stayed in steady use, today often shortened to Edi. It was borne by Eduard Caudella, composer and violinist from Iași, teacher of the young George Enescu and author of the opera Petru Rareș.
