Origin and meaning of Donato
Donato comes from the Latin donatus, the past participle of donare, 'given, gifted': in Christian naming it marked a child 'given by God' or dedicated to Him. It has an old, devout flavour, tied to several early saints and martyrs. It remains fairly traditional, common above all in southern Italy and, in related forms, across Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries.
