Origin and meaning of Darius
Darius reached Europe through the Greek Dareîos, a rendering of the Old Persian Dārayavahuš, “he who holds firm the good”: it was the name of the great Achaemenid kings, above all Darius I. In Romania it spread from the 1990s onwards and is now among the most popular choices for newborn boys, helped by its exotic ring and by the -us ending that lines it up with local Latin-style names such as Marius and Aurelius.
